a (new) tradition of independence

Hey, let’s start a new Independence Day tradition. Who’s in? You can still have your fireworks and parades and barbeques and hang out with friends and family or whatever other traditions you like. We’re going to add something in.

Let’s add in a tradition that starts with our own declaration of independence.

What would you like that to be?

There are a few angles to think about.

First, what would you like to declare your independence FROM? May I take the liberty of suggesting a few starter items? How about should, guilt, berating yourself, black and white thinking, buying into the myth of one-size-fits-all, outdated beliefs about yourself or how the world works…pretty much anything that holds you back?

Maybe there’s a specific behavior you’d like to be free from. Sure, put it on your list and declare away.

Okay, next angle – what are you declaring your freedom TO pursue? Some of the basics are already covered in the bill of rights – like the pursuit of happiness – but what would you like to declare for yourself?

The last angle is FOR, because that’s your motivation, your why, and that will make it stick. What is your compelling reason to declare your independence.  Yes, of course the answer can be a who! Love is always a more than acceptable answer!

Maybe when you’ve crafted your own personal declaration of independence, you’ll have a very personal celebration today.

I would love for you to share in the comments!

And remember: in all things – progress, not perfection!
