The magic of sleep

When I was a child and something upset me, my mom always (ALWAYS) said, “Go to bed. Everything is better after a good night’s sleep.” I think that she partly wanted me to just calm down and give her some peace (there were four of us!) but she was also sharing some big wisdom.

Sleep is magical.

Sleep is the time our body uses to regenerate, repair and renew.

Sleep is when our immune, nervous, muscular and skeletal systems are restored.

Sleep is the time our brain uses to clean up after the day – it files memories, events, observations and tasks away neatly so that we can find them when we need them and makes room for new ones to come in.

Sleep is the time our subconscious mind uses to process things that need a little more processing power than we have available during the day. I think that’s one of the functions of dreaming.

Our mind also uses sleep as a time to go deeper into the memory files to retrieve some information – which is why I often remember things at 3 am.  I also notice that my brain solves a lot of problems overnight for me.

I used to worry things a lot at night, and it kept me from sleeping. Now, I’ve found it’s much more effective for me to let my brain handle things magically while I sleep and deliver up some ideas when we meet again in the morning.

My mom was a witch, and she was so right! A good night’s sleep is a perspective changer – almost everything is magically a bit better.

And remember: in all things – progress, not perfection!

Love and light, Maggie
