After spending more time in these crazy, unprecedented times we are definitely in a different place than we were one or even two weeks ago. Time seems to go slowly, but things change quickly. The world is shifting. The pendulum swings.
One thing that happens is humans adapt. We already talk about the new normal. It is not possible to exist in a constant state of anxiety, no matter how much media hype or fear mongering we are exposed to, because we just aren’t wired for it. So we begin to experience moments of calm. They’ll be different for any of us on any given day, but they will start to string together into larger and larger blocks of time.
Here’s something I know to be true: when we move out of fear and into hope we become itchy to take action, because humans really like being productive. We like to do and make things, because creating is a reflection of our creator, right? We want to take action, to do something. That’s why the heroes on the front line can do what they do.
We are at our very best when we get to the place where we want to do things for each other.
It’s why we are moved by watching people sing together from their balconies in Italy.
It’s why we crave good news stories.
It’s why we start talking to neighbors we’ve never met before as they walk past on their new daily walking routine.
It’s why we are inspired to be the random-acts-of-kindness person.
It’s also why we begin doing more and more things for others – whether we call people to check in, start sewing fabric masks for the local health care providers, make and deliver extra meals, pick up groceries for someone, foster animals from the shelter, pour your heart into a blog post, donate money to a local food bank… the list really does go on and on.
We are in this for the long haul.
We will all feel so much better if we take care of another being.
Remember this: you are loved.
Remember this: The people most threatened are currently the weakest among us. They need hope and they need our help and support, not our panic. We need to be our best, strongest, most generous, rational and compassionate selves. People are counting on us.
If these words helped you, please feel free to share them with someone you know who might need. That’s one kind thing that you can do. And if you have additional, positive ideas, please share them in the comments!
And remember: in all things – progress, not perfection!
Love and light, Maggie
