I’ve been working on letting go of things that aren’t mine: thoughts, responsibilities, fears and worries, mostly. Of course, the whole “why does it have to be so hard” stuff comes up.
As you probably know, I don’t ride to school on the anything worth doing must be a struggle bus. I wait for the what strengths and experiences do I have that will help me in this situation limo. Okay, limo is an exaggeration, but it’s much more comfortable than the struggle bus…and I think we can use some of that comfort when we are doing something new or difficult.
So, letting go – what have I done that is comparable?
Spending. Giving. Trusting. Sharing. Setting something down because it’s heavy.
There are even aspects of letting go in vacationing, in sleeping and in dreaming.
Yes, all of these things are related to letting go. So why does it have to be so hard? It doesn’t. Oh. Right. It doesn’t. I just think it does.
I can look around at how good I am at spending and giving and sharing, and how much I enjoy vacationing and sleeping and dreaming. If the groceries are too heavy, I make two trips. I discover that I have lots of evidence that I can use to support my new belief that I am good at letting go when it’s right.
If my sneaky brain comes in through the side door and whispers “you can’t give up that thought – that’s being irresponsible, that’s unrealistic” I can just escort it out the front with a confident “thanks, but I’ve got this, because I’ve got experience.”
It is amazing how much confidence and relief comes when you can tell yourself that you have experience. Like in a job interview, the experience can be related! We can repurpose our skills in many colorful ways.
Speaking of color, what color helps with this kind of repurposing? Gold. Gold is the color of our inner wisdom, deep knowing and experience. Think of it as mining for those nuggets in the part of your life that you’ve already lived! Eureka when you find them!
In the meantime, remember these things: You are loved. We are all loved. Let’s all be kind. And in all things – progress, not perfection!
Love and light,
Maggie
