harmony isn’t just one note

That’s right, harmony isn’t made up of just one note.

When I think about the music that I love, it’s made up of lush, complex harmonies. Different voices. Different instruments.

I especially like crunchy, contemporary music that has a bit of discord and resolution. The discord makes the resolution even sweeter.

I also like a lot of color. After all, there’s a whole rainbow of colors to choose from, right? How boring is it if everyone wears or likes the same color? I’ve even learned to like color combinations that used to seem like clashes to me, such as pink and orange, or brown and turquoise.

These are great metaphors, and I believe they hold an important message for us right now.

People have always had different ideas, opinions, experiences, goals and desires. Always. Each one of us is absolutely unique. That’s diversity. That’s richness.

In my lifetime, I haven’t ever seen as much polarization as I see now – though I have noticed it grow dramatically over the last decade.

Polarization is when we perceive people who disagree with us as our enemy.

Polarization happens as a result of stress and fear. It’s a result of black-and-white thinking, reducing our options to only two variables: right or wrong, good or evil, helpful or hurtful.

Without going all conspiracy theory on you, I bet there are some forces that are benefitting from this trend and are intentionally perpetuating it. Or unintentionally. Doesn’t really matter.

What does matter is that we, as individuals, take back our control. We don’t need to be afraid of people who disagree. We don’t need to create enemies out of them.

Fear and hatred do not actually help us survive or even think clearly, and they DEFINITELY do not help us thrive.

We need the differences to create harmony. We need all the colors to create the rainbow.

In the meantime, remember these things: You are loved. We are all loved. Let’s all be kind. And in all things – progress, not perfection!

Love and light,
