My Hermione’s Bag

I was talking with a client the other day, and together we came up with a couple of fun metaphors I wanted to share with you.

You know how when you have a lot of stuff rolling around in your mind it tends to multiply? Like when you remember you have to change the litter box, you might also remember that you need to get washers for the hose and update the graphics on the PowerPoint presentation that you’re working on? Oh, and order Royo bagels because you’re almost out…and, and, and.

Your brain gets full to overflowing, and you realize that you are carrying all these things around with you, afraid that you’re going to start dropping things, and they’ll roll away and get lost. Pretty soon you’re pushing around a borrowed grocery cart full of things that you have to remember, and you’re so overwhelmed. Okay, make that me. I do that, and I get so overwhelmed and convinced that everything is falling apart and I’m pushing my grocery cart of belongings to my new home under the bridge.

But I do have a trick to get out of that metaphor. It’s a list. I make a list. Or a couple of lists. A shopping list. A To-Do List. An Ideas List. Once I’ve placed something on a list, I have trained myself that it’s safe. It’s safe to take it out of the cart (yeah, that’s really my brain, I know, I know) and just leave it on the list. I know where it is. I will get to it at the right time. It won’t roll away. My brain is under control, my life is manageable, and I can sleep at night. Lists are magic like that, plus there’s the dopamine hit I get when I mark something complete! Bonus!

But that’s a lot of lists and list-making, isn’t it? I still need some place to mentally put them. Some lists I only need for a day or so, so I could put them on post-its (I do) or they represent a week’s work, so I could keep them in a notebook (I do that, too). But what about the list of books I want to read? Or movies to watch? Or series to start? Or archeological sites to read about? Or dinosaurs? Or camping sites to research? Or random phrases to Google (like “forest formal”)? I need those lists, too. Really, I do.

I save them on my notes app on my phone.

My phone is my very own Hermione’s bag. And it has the Undetectable Extension Charm! I have all of my lists. I have some rando games. I have a couple of apps that maybe someday I’ll explore if I ever have spare time. I have a few Kindle books. Access to recipes. And YouTube, and Netflix. Of course, I also have access to Google. I just have to reach into my designer Hermione bag and pull out what I need. Which, 9 times out of 10, is one of my lists.

In the meantime, remember these things: You are loved. We are all loved. Let’s all be kind. And in all things – progress, not perfection!

Love, and light in the pages,
