Suck it up and step up

Some of us are wired to take the lead.

Some of us aren’t. Some of us are followers or doers, but not leaders.

For some of us, it is situational. We’ll take the lead when we have the authority. We’ll take the lead if no one else does. We’ll take it, but only if someone tells us to take it (yes, irony.) Or maybe we have to force ourselves NOT to take the lead so that someone else can.

It can be pretty uncomfortable when all these types of people are thrown together. Messy even. Words get thrown around. Bossy. Controlling. Lazy. No initiative. Not nice words.

I’m currently in a situation where I’m watching a complete leadership vacuum. It’s not pretty. The vacuum is sucking the life out of a committee that needs to take action. I am not on the committee, but I am waiting for a decision and subsequent actions. I feel like I’m waiting for an egg to hatch. Except the egg is sitting in a carton in the fridge. It’s not going to hatch.

I want to provide guidance. No, what I really want to do is shout: “Suck it up and step up!”

That egg isn’t going to hatch by itself. Okay, it won’t hatch at all, but that messes with my metaphor. Just go buy a chicken!

Seriously, what can you do when you’re in a situation like this? (A situation where no one is stepping up to lead a group of people out of the cave for whatever reason.) You can sit back and watch the dumpster fire. You can take control and start making decisions. Is there a compromise?

I can think of two ways to compromise off the top of my head. I’m sure there are more.

One is to find a partner and share the leadership.

The other is to be a facilitator. Sure, that’s a type of leadership, I guess. I think of it more as providing a structure or framework for a group to think through a situation. You help them answer questions and guide them to make decisions. You might even teach them how to analyze options, make decisions, set action steps as a result of decisions, and track progress. You know, get things done.

I guess I just talked myself into something here. Beats letting the vacuum suck my soul out of my ears.

In the meantime, remember these things: You are loved. We are all loved. Let’s all be kind. And in all things – progress, not perfection!

Love, and light in the pages,
